STRENGH ITSELF
In the introduction to Borderland Series 2022, it is noted that what appears as an ancient distribution map of the Great Wall is merely a rubbing; its original manuscript resides in Xi'an's Stele Forest Museum. The designer embarked on a new journey to witness firsthand the original form of this tablet while exploring various creations in its vicinity. Through introspective reflections and sentiments during this journey, a new series emerged—a dialogue concerning time and resilience.
"The stone tablet is adorned with an abundance of inscriptions, chronicling a multitude of histories; however, it is the imposing black stone that truly captivates my attention. Initially, I presumed the tablet was crafted from volcanic rock or black marble, but upon further examination, I discovered it to be composed of the most commonplace and widely utilized grey granite. By methodically applying layers of black and red ink onto the surface of the tablet, I produced various rubbings. The originally vibrant red ink ultimately yielded to the passage of time, transforming into a shade of black alongside the unremarkable granite. This process—characterized by repeated saturation, absorption, and oxidation—bestowed upon the granite a distinctive texture that I find utterly enchanting; it seems to suggest that black signifies the culmination of all things."
